Brazilian Final Ends in Chaos as Record 23 Red Cards Issued After Brutal On-Field Brawl

Cruzeiro’s victory over rivals Atlético Mineiro in the Campeonato Mineiro final on Sunday was overshadowed by a violent mass brawl that resulted in a record-breaking 23 players being sent off.

While Cruzeiro secured the state title with a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from Kaio Jorge, the sporting achievement was eclipsed by ugly scenes in the closing minutes. The trouble began when Atlético goalkeeper Everson shoved Cruzeiro midfielder Christian to the ground following a collision. The situation rapidly deteriorated into a free-for-all involving punches and flying kicks, drawing in players, coaching staff, and security personnel.

The chaos forced referee Matheus Delgado Candancan to end the game abruptly. In his subsequent official report, Candancan issued red cards to nearly the entire rosters—12 from Cruzeiro and 11 from Atlético—setting a new record for the most dismissals in a single Brazilian match. The previous record of 22 had stood since 1954.

Among those expelled was veteran forward Hulk, who was filmed striking an opponent during the melee. Following the match, Hulk expressed deep regret, stating that the violence was a poor example for the sport and tarnished the image of both clubs. Cruzeiro coach Tite focused his post-match comments on thanking the fans, though he emphasized that respect and dignity must remain central to the game.

The authorities are expected to issue lengthy bans as they review video footage of the incident.
