Marc Marquez secured his first win of the 2026 season on Saturday, capitalising on a late mistake by pole-sitter Fabio Di Giannantonio to claim victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix sprint. The win marks an emotional milestone for the eight-time world champion, representing his first victory in any format since a major injury sidelined him late last year.
A Tense Duel in Goiania The 15-lap race at the Autódromo Internacional Ayrton Senna was a tactical battle from the start. Di Giannantonio, riding for VR46 Racing, maintained a steady lead for the majority of the sprint. However, the pressure from Marquez eventually told; with just three laps remaining, Di Giannantonio ran wide at Turn 12. Marquez, aboard his Ducati, seized the opening and held off a fierce counter-attack to cross the finish line just 0.213 seconds ahead of his rival.
Overcoming Track Chaos The event was nearly derailed before it began. Race officials were forced to delay the start by over an hour to perform emergency repairs on a large hole discovered near the starting line. Marquez noted the intensity of the situation, admitting the riders “prayed” the damage wasn’t on the primary racing line, which would have made the competition impossible.
Podium and Comeback
- 1st Place: Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team)
- 2nd Place: Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46 Racing)
- 3rd Place: Jorge Martin (Aprilia Racing), marking his first podium since his 2024 title-winning season.
For Marquez, the victory is a significant step in his recovery after fracturing his collarbone at the Indonesian Grand Prix in October 2025. While thrilled with the sprint win, the Spaniard emphasized that his primary focus remains on the main Grand Prix race on Sunday, where he is set to start from the third row.
