Passing the Torch in the Amazon: Chief Megaron Prepared to Continue Legendary Uncle’s Environmental Fight

Chief Megaron Txucarramae, a prominent 75-year-old leader of Brazil’s Kayapo people, is ready to take on the responsibility of preserving the life’s work of his uncle and mentor, Chief Raoni Metuktire. The 94-year-old Chief Raoni is a globally recognized symbol of the Amazon preservation movement, famously known for campaigning alongside world figures, popes, and the musician Sting since the 1980s. Following Raoni’s recent hospitalizations—including a week-long stay in intensive care for pneumonia—Megaron, who has worked by his uncle’s side since childhood, has affirmed his commitment to leading the fight forward.

Megaron’s assumption of leadership comes at a precarious moment for the Amazon rainforest, which has lost nearly 20% of its area to agricultural expansion and mining while facing severe climate-induced wildfires and droughts. Speaking from the village of Pykany during a Greenpeace-led mission to track illicit mining, Megaron emphasized that safeguarding the Amazon is a global necessity, noting that the forest regulates temperatures, buffers winds, and ensures the world can breathe.

In addition to environmental protection, Megaron plans to focus heavily on the political and cultural survival of Indigenous communities:

  • Combating Anti-Indigenous Legislation: Megaron sharply criticized recent laws passed by Brazil’s Congress aimed at reducing Indigenous land protections, stating that while opponents can no longer eliminate Indigenous populations with weapons, they are attempting to use legislation to seize territory and erase their culture.
  • Political Representation: To push back against hostile laws, Megaron is advocating for greater Indigenous representation in Brazilian politics, pointing out the severe lack of representation in the current legislature. He expressed profound concern regarding upcoming general elections, fearing a potential victory by candidates opposed to Indigenous rights who could freeze land demarcations, as was done under the previous presidential administration.
  • Preserving Cultural Identity: Aligning with his uncle’s core mission, Megaron aims to prevent Indigenous youth from abandoning their heritage. He emphasized that while young people should pursue higher education, they must never lose their Indigenous identity and customs.
