Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has temporarily left house arrest to undergo surgery on his shoulder, according to a statement from his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year sentence related to a 2023 coup attempt following his election loss. He had recently been granted a 90-day “humanitarian” house arrest period due to deteriorating health, including a recent bout of pneumonia. The shoulder procedure, which had been pre-authorized by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, is the latest in a long series of medical interventions for the former leader, many of which stem from complications following his 2018 campaign stabbing. +2
Under the terms of his house arrest, Bolsonaro remains under strict surveillance, including the use of an ankle monitor and prohibitions on unauthorized communication or visitors.
